Our Mission

To provide emergency food items to Markham residents in need.

The problem of hunger is a persistent one, the people who turn to food banks include families with children, employed people whose wages are not sufficient to cover basic living essentials, individuals on social assistance, and Canadians living on a fixed income, including people with disabilities and seniors.

The Food Bank was founded in 1984 to help the residents of Markham meet their short-term need for food. Jean Lee was concerned about people going hungry in the town. They started the food bank in a portable situated on Church Street, which was obtained with the aid of Alma Walker (then town Mayor). At that time they assisted eight to ten families a month. All the food was stored in one large Tupperware container.

Since that time, the food bank has had many homes. Currently we are located at 190 Bullock Drive, Unit 11. The facility is bright, large and in a convenient location. The founding directors were Sheila Spinks and Phylis Tyrie. Gladys Keeble joined a few months later.

Over 21,791 individuals in Markham live in poverty everyday!
Of all the York Regional food bank users, 41% of adults and 17% of children go hungry at least once a week. Markham wide, low-income earners reach 16%.

The problem is that we get a lot of food between Thanksgiving and Christmas and that food is supposed to sustain us all year round and it doesn’t. 17 per cent of Markham’s population is poor, having an income of less than $25, 000 a year. For a bachelor, that is okay, but for a family, nearly half of that is spent on rent. After bills, hyrdo and all of the other things, food comes last and sometimes there is not enough.
